Saturday school to educate children on Black History to launch next year

Culture Community, a Saturday school which will support children from all cultures and backgrounds, expects to launch in 2021 – and funding from Youth Inspired is helping them get started.

Youth Inspired, through their Integrated Communities Funding from Peterborough City Council, will be funding a new youth project, Culture Community.

Youth Inspired, based at PCVS, has acquired £50,000 from Peterborough City Council to fund community projects across Peterborough. Culture Community is one of the first of these projects to be awarded funding via the Youth Inspired Young Commissioners Panel.

Culture Community – which is hoping to launch in the New Year – is a Saturday school which will support children from all cultures and backgrounds and will teach them black history and traditions which are not taught in schools in the UK. The school will be available for 11 to 16 year olds with the option for younger people to join.

Culture Community will give children of all races a chance to have the difficult conversations that they may feel they are not able to have with their friends or family. This may include conversations with individuals who may not be the same race as themselves.

The school will not only teach children about black history, it will also aim to teach life skills such as cooking and will encourage positive mind-sets, building young people’s self-esteem and confidence.

Precious Graham (Chairperson for Culture Community) is excited about what this school will mean for the future of the local community: "This project is important as it will teach children black history, something that has not been done before in Peterborough. Children will learn black history whilst socialising and having fun together. We want to build a togetherness in Peterborough for all the youth and let them know they are very important and capable of anything in a positive environment."

"The funding we have received will support the project to get the resources to start a Saturday school that has the potential to change children's lives for the better. Knowledge is power and this school is ready to change children's mind-sets and give them the knowledge of their history."
