Flag-raising ceremony marks efforts of Windrush generation

A flag-raising ceremony marking the achievements of the Windrush generation was carried out this morning outside Peterborough Town Hall.

A brief ceremony - held with social distancing in place - was attended by Peterborough City Council leader John Holdich and CEO Gillian Beasley, Cllr Irene Walsh, mayor Cllr Gul Nawaz, PCC senior beadle Ernest Mensah-Sekyere, Bernadetta Omondi (PREC) and Windrush representative Julia Davidson.

Julia said about Windrush: "Raising the standard for Black History Month in Peterborough (and around the UK) acknowledges the cities' diverse rich culture and heritage and this is truly music to our hears. So if music be the food of love, play on, give us excess of it so sufficing the appetite may stricken and so die any form of hate. Love is the answer!

"October is not just for black people to raise awareness of an array of cultural, history, heritage, achievements, gains and losses in all walks of life, as all history is intermingled in and around the world's past, present and future generations.

"Please don’t feel excluded, be a part of what we hope will be a vibrant October. We are in the business of making all lives better and recognising the contributions of all, so share the love."
